A razão é que você não tem drivers certos para o chip funcionar. Eu também tenho o mesmo dispositivo Broadcom no meu laptop e aproveito minha palavra, é o pior dispositivo de rede que existe.
A razão por trás disso é, primeiro, é um chip combinado para Bluetooth e Wireless LAN. Em segundo lugar, o motorista. Eu perdi muito tempo encontrando drivers para o Ubuntu.
Se for de alguma ajuda, você pode instalar drivers no Ubuntu com este comando.
