Como instalar o MySQL Ruby Gem no Ubuntu 9.10?

Estou com problemas para instalar o Ruby Gem for MySQL. Este é o comando que estou executando:

sudo gem install mysql

O que preciso fazer para instalar isso?

Graças a este tópico , descobri que a razão pela qual ele falha na instalação é por causa de

... um caminho apontando para o lado errado quando o pacote foi compilado.

Felizmente, a solução é muito simples:

sudo gem uninstall mysql
sudo apt-get install libmysqlclient-dev -y
sudo gem install mysql 

Nota: Recebi uma mensagem de erro ao tentar desinstalar o mysql, mas tudo bem porque não foi instalado em primeiro lugar. Ao instalar o mysql gem, recebi mensagens que pareciam erros:, No definition for next_resultmas essas não são erros. Isso acontece ao instalar a documentação. São apenas mensagens dizendo que não há documentação disponível para determinadas funções.

Você realmente não precisa dessa gema para usar o MySQL no Ruby. Existe um pacote no Debian / Ubuntu que já possui o mesmo código já compilado e preparado. Apenas digite sudo apt-get install libmysql-ruby.

No Ubuntu Hardy, 8.04, consegui instalar o apt-get:

sudo apt-get install libmysqlclient15-dev -y
