Ainda acredito que a recomendação do Yahoo tem sua origem na incapacidade do Yahoobot de usar o HTTP 1.1. A validação de tags de entidade é algo diferente de validar em relação à última modificação.

Não remova ETags apenas por um capricho, elas podem ser benéficas, pois depende de muitos fatores.

@rilwis ETag é para validação forte : um widget alterado, por exemplo, não altera Last-Modified, mas altera ETag. Veja também o Tutorial de Cache .

Melhores regras de reescrita para WordPress permalinks

Por padrão, o WordPress envia uma página 404 HTML para imagens e folhas de estilo ausentes - elas nunca são renderizadas por um navegador. E captura seus links simbólicos.
