Uma pesquisa no servidor de nomes recupera o endereço IP associado a um nome de domínio.
Uma pesquisa por nome de domínio (também chamada whois) recupera os dados de registro do domínio (os detalhes do proprietário do domínio).

a pesquisa de nome de domínio pode ser respondida por um cache (ou seja, no host local ou pelo seu provedor). Uma pesquisa no servidor de nomes vai diretamente para o servidor de nomes, ignorando os caches entre você e o servidor de nomes.
